The Frequency of Music

Music has always been influential to millions of people, they may not have been influenced at the same time or with the same sort of music, but nevertheless almost everyone in the world has been affected by music in some way. We have a very deep connection with music, which goes far beyond feelings. Music affects our body as well as our mentality; some of you may not be aware of it, yet your brain begins to function differently while listening to music. 

This is why music has slowly taken over various new spaces. For example, many hospitals and spas have started using music to help relieve confusion, anxiety, and pain. Alongside this is ‘Music Therapy’, which is being used on people with various mental disorders, varying from schizophrenia to depression. Music has many healing qualities, and is used as a nonverbal source of communication.

Many of you may be unaware that our brain reads music differently, and helps to connect various areas of our brain. For instance, learning to read music can aid your brain in helping it to interpret and recognize music.

Effect of Music on Human Mind and Body

Science has proved that everything in the world, even the human body, is made of energy vibrating at different frequencies, therefore, it is only natural to wonder if sound frequencies can play a part in altering our mind and body. One particular theory presented is that frequencies affect thought, in the same way that mixing different ingredients when cooking will produce a different result in taste.

Frequencies
A frequency of 1 Hz signifies one wave cycle per second, similarly 10 Hz will mean 10 wave cycles per second; the latter of which produces cycles that are far shorter and closer together. Moreover, the note A, which is above Middle C, has a frequency of 440 Hz and is used as a reference to tune different musical instruments.

Ever since the dawn of man, music has been used to help elicit moods. We can easily create a soundtrack for every mood and every phase of our life. War, love, birth, love, death, mourning, competition, milestone, comedy, tragedy; each of them can be explained with music.

More than just functioning as a soundtrack, music has the ability to impact brain function, behaviour, and moods. Oliver Sacks completed a study on humans and their connection to music, which concluded that even while not paying attention to music our brains are subconsciously attentive to it. The consecutive trans beat can put you in a hypnotic state as its beats go along with your body's own beat.

Humans have the ability to imagine music, and so we are able to hear music purely by using our brain. For instance, have you ever had a song stuck in your head? That is a direct example of how your brain is able to play songs inside your head.

Various studies have shown that music can enhance memory, mathematic skill, IQ, and spatial reasoning, as music has the ability to enhance synchronicity and communication between both left and right brain hemispheres. This enhances your brain function and spurs what is known as “genius thinking”. Music can put your brain in a theta and alpha state. You may know that alpha brainwaves help boost creativity, while theta waves boost lucid dreaming and super learning, therefore, every single genre can put you in a different state of mind, whether it be classical music, jazz, heavy metal, pop, tribal, or reggae.

However, we know that most music differs in frequency, volume, and tempo, thus it cannot create a constant Alpha state in your brain. And so music is able to relax you, yet it will not be able to keep your brainwaves in a constant state.

In total there are 1,264 genres of popular music, each and every one of which has differing frequencies, tempo, and volumes that set it apart from any other. Which, in simple terms, means that each music frequency will set you in a different frame of mind to any of its sister frequencies.
