The Evolution of Spiderman

No matter how many superheroes are re-imagined and introduced every year, Spiderman will always be the most beloved, relatable and recognizable super-hero around the world. The journey of Spiderman began with the Marvel Comics, and was a great success, gaining popularity with each new episode released.

The journey of Spiderman then veered towards CBC and a series named “The Amazing Spider-Man”, starring Nicholas Hammond as Peter Parker/Spiderman (1977 to 1979). Although Hammond played Peter Parker in the television series, in the scenes in which Spider-Man is seen performing stunts or is without dialogue, a stunt double was filmed by a second camera unit. The series was so awe-inspiring that it grabbed the attention of 16 million viewers.

After the successful journey of “The Amazing Spider-Man”, Tobey Maguire, was found to be starring in a new Spiderman movie that was to be released on May 3, 2002, directed by Sam Raimi and produced by Laura Ziskin and Ian Bryce. The goofy and charming looks of Tobey Maguire add to the heroic acts he performs after being bitten by a spider and are greatly involved in its triumph. The transformation of Tobey Maguire in Spiderman 2 is jaw-dropping. From the costume of Spiderman to the costumes of Green Goblin, they alone are enough to add more heroism to the characters than could be thought possible. The movie broke through 100 million dollars in a single opening evening.

On June 25, 2004 Spiderman 2 was released. Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco reprised their respective roles as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Mary Jane Watson, and Harry Osborn. The introduction of new villain Dr. Otto Octavius (Doctor Octopus) becomes a diabolical villain after a failed experiment kills his wife and leaves him neurologically fused to mechanical tentacles. To stop him recreating this experiment, which threatens to annihilate the city, begets Spiderman’s next adventure. The film grossed $783.8 million worldwide, which led to the production of its third installment, Spiderman 3.

The production of Spiderman 3, keeping the same cast and new villain Harry Osborn, revolves around the seeking of vengeance for Peter Parker’s father's death; attacking Peter with new weapons based on his father's Green Goblin technology. The movie is about the fight for good, the allegation leveled on Peter and the reconciliation of Peter and Mary-Jane’s relationship. The movie was released on May 4, 2007 and grossed $890.9 million worldwide.

On June 30th, 2012, “The Amazing Spiderman” was released, causing friction as the super hero got rebooted and reimagined. Andrew Garfield was announced to be playing the role of Peter Parker. The re-telling of the same origin story was risky on its own, yet the roles played by Andrew and Emma Stone (played a role of Mary Jane) proved very successful. Andrew played the role of the bullied, outcast, nerd, Peter Parker, very convincingly, however, the way he represented the sarcastic role was spellbinding proving no one could play it better. The CGI special visible villain got neglected, due to improved special effects.

Considering the success of “The Amazing Spiderman”, its sequel was released on March 31, 2014. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was originally envisioned as the beginning of a shared fictional universe, which would have continued with two sequels and several spin-off films. Due to the sequel unfortunately performing below its expectations, Andrew Garfield was fired, and all subsequent installments were cancelled, promising a new iteration of the character, portrayed by Tom Holland to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War. He is scheduled to appear in his own film in 2017.

Spider-man Homecoming is an upcoming American movie based on the original Marvel Character of Spiderman. The second reboot of the Spiderman has begun, in which Tom Holland plays the role of Peter Parker. It is believed to be being released on July 5th 2017.
